Touhou Koumakyou New Classic Guides for the Scarlet Mist Incident
From first boot to Extra Stage, with routes for Remilia and Flandre.
This hub is the play order for Touhou Koumakyou New Classic, the official 2026 remaster of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. Shanghai Alice Reprise (ZUN and JYUNYA / AQUA STYLE) built it; Alliance Arts ships it on Steam, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation 5 as a single-player game. Standard includes New Classic and Classic. Use these pages in sequence unless you already 1CC 2002 and only need Extra.
Start with Getting Started if the library icons still confuse you. It settles Standard versus Deluxe (~$17.99 / ¥1,990 versus ~$24.63 / ¥2,966 with the 30+ track soundtrack), tells you to boot New Classic first, and puts Reimu A or Marisa A in your hands for Challenge Mode. A first hour that skips that page usually starts in Classic’s Japanese menu or on Lunatic, then quits.
Set controls before a real credit. Arrows or WASD, Z shot, X bomb, Shift focus, Esc pause. New Classic draws the hitbox while focused; the deathbomb window is still those eight frames the Steam achievement jokes about. Switch and PlayStation 5 players should put focus on a shoulder and confirm Key Config instead of trusting a default pad. Classic’s extra confirm button belongs in that same sitting if you plan to import 1.02h saves.
New Classic vs Classic is the product split, not flavor text. New Classic is 1080p, 12 languages, ZUN rearrangements, Spell Practice, Challenge Mode with a death counter, boss markers, Steam achievements and Cloud. Classic is the 2002 recreation, Japanese only, with save/replay import and faster replay. Both are in Standard. Play New Classic to learn; play Classic when you want the old object sizes without teaching overlays.
The stage walkthrough routes Stages 1–6 as a resource graph: Rumia, Lake Sprite ~ Water Magus (Cirno), Scarlet Border ~ Scarlet Land (Meiling), Patchouli’s library with Koakuma, Sakuya, then Remilia with Sakuya and Patchouli midbosses. Easy ends at Stage 5. Bomb rules change by stage. Arrive at the clock tower with 128 power and lives still on the HUD.
How to Beat Remilia is Stage 6’s actual boss, including Vampire Clock / Scarlet Meister family patterns and the timeout plan for Scarlet Gensokyo. It does not reprint Flandre. After a no-continue Normal-or-higher clear, Extra Stage covers the unlock, the two 1UPs, resource poverty, and Patchouli’s Silent Selene, Royal Flare, and Philosopher’s Stone. How to Beat Flandre then walks Cranberry Trap through Q.E.D. Ripples of 495 Years, with Marisa A / Reimu B as the Extra shots and a hard split between timeout cards and kill-now cards.
When the story credit is the goal, follow How to 1CC. Spell Practice and the card index live on spell cards. Point items, graze, and extends are on scoring. Day-one pattern deltas — circular hitboxes, Stage 3 extra waves, blocked premelts — are on gameplay changes.
Shot comparisons live on the shot type ranking and the Reimu / Marisa pages. Drill binds and cards in practice. PC specs are on system requirements. Stores and official accounts are on links. The remaster is out as of 9 September 2026; Steam sits at Overwhelmingly Positive around 98 percent of about 2,149 reviews. Read in order, then take a Normal credit.
