Touhou Koumakyou New Classic Your first hour in the Scarlet Mist
Buy the right edition, boot New Classic, and survive with Reimu A or Marisa A.
Touhou Koumakyou New Classic launched on 9 September 2026 as the official remaster of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. Shanghai Alice Reprise — ZUN with JYUNYA of AQUA STYLE — rebuilt the 2002 game; Alliance Arts publishes it on Steam, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation 5. It is single-player. Steam reviews sit at Overwhelmingly Positive, around 98 percent. This page is the buy-and-boot checklist. Once Stage 3 stops deleting you on sight, move to the stage walkthrough.
Standard or Deluxe
Standard is about $17.99 / ¥1,990 and includes both programs: New Classic and Classic. Deluxe is about $24.63 / ¥2,966 and adds the soundtrack — more than 30 tracks covering the 2002 originals and ZUN’s New Classic arrangements. On Steam, Deluxe is a three-item bundle. Buy Standard to play; buy Deluxe for the music files. Store pages live under links. Confirm the listing includes both versions, then read New Classic vs Classic so you boot the right executable on purpose.
Which version to boot first
Boot New Classic first. It runs at 1080p, ships 12 languages, rearranges every track, draws a hitbox while you focus, marks bosses, and adds Spell Practice plus Challenge Mode. Challenge Mode gives unlimited lives and a death counter — that is the teaching tool. Classic recreates 2002 as closely as possible, in Japanese only. It can import original 1.02h saves and replays, speeds replays up, and adds an extra confirm-button option in key config. Open Classic after you already know the routes, or if you still have a 2002 install to carry forward.
Challenge Mode versus a credit
Challenge Mode is not a second story. Lives become Infinite on the HUD and a death count ticks up every time you get hit without a successful deathbomb. Bombs stay limited. Power still drops when you die. You simply respawn instead of seeing Continue. Use it to learn Stages 1–6 and to mark which cards belong in Spell Practice.
A credit is the real run: finite lives, continues on the six-stage story, and Extra locked behind a Normal-or-higher clear with no continue. Easy still ends at Stage 5, so a first Easy credit will never show Remilia. Do not treat a Challenge clear as a 1CC. When a pattern’s death count stops climbing, take it into a limited-life credit.
Shot pick for beginners
Start with Reimu A: homing amulets and Fantasy Seal. Homing covers fairies you cannot sit under, so Stage 1–3 streaming does not require perfect aim. Marisa A is the next step: magic missiles and Stardust Reverie. Missiles hit harder, still have some spread, and shorten boss timers. Leave Reimu B (needles / Evil-Sealing Circle) and Marisa B (laser / Master Spark) until you can hold a line under a boss without drifting. Compare the four shots on the shot type ranking and the Reimu and Marisa pages after one Easy Challenge clear.
Controls and HUD before Stage 1
Open Options and map movement to arrow keys or WASD, shot to Z, bomb to X, focus to Shift, and pause to Esc. Gamepads remap in Key Config. Steam New Classic lists partial controller support; Switch and PlayStation 5 are built around pads. Focus slows you and, in New Classic, draws the hitbox. Full mapping and deathbombs live on controls.
The HUD shows Hi Score, Score, Player lives, Bomb, Power (max 128), Graze, and Points. Challenge Mode replaces the life stock with Infinite plus the death count. Collect red power to 128 before bosses. Blue point items score more the higher you grab them; fly to the collection line at the top of the playfield to vacuum the screen. Original extends sit at 10, 20, 40, and 60 million. New Classic keeps that same scoring core — point items, collection line, graze. The death counter is a tally, not a new rank system.
PC players should skim system requirements first. A bad key bind will kill you more often than a weak GPU.
First-hour plan
- Install, boot New Classic, pick a language, and finish controls so shot and bomb cannot be mashed by accident.
- Reimu A, Easy, Challenge Mode. Play Stages 1–3. Bomb only when a hit is certain. Count deaths. Ignore score.
- Same shot, Easy Challenge, full run to Stage 5. Learn Rumia, Cirno, Meiling, Patchouli, and Sakuya as HUD names, not lore homework.
- Open Spell Practice on every card that killed you more than twice. New Classic added this because 2002 had no official spell trainer.
- Switch to Normal Challenge. Goal: reach Stage 6 with a death count you can stand to look at. Use the walkthrough for midboss timing and bomb spends.
- Start a Normal credit with limited lives. Continue is allowed while you learn. Extra still needs a no-continue Normal-or-higher clear.
- When Remilia ends the credit, read How to Beat Remilia. After a Normal 1CC, open Extra Stage and How to Beat Flandre.
A practice planner lives under practice. Deluxe tracks sit under Deluxe edition. Do not start on Lunatic, do not boot Classic first if you cannot read Japanese, and do not swap shots every death. Give Reimu A two Challenge runs and use Spell Practice. If hour one feels like a wall, stay in Easy Challenge until Stage 3 deaths are rare.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about New Classic, Classic, shot types, and Extra Stage.
Should I buy Standard or Deluxe for a first playthrough?
Standard (~$17.99 / ¥1,990) already includes New Classic and Classic. Deluxe (~$24.63 / ¥2,966) adds the soundtrack as a third Steam item. Buy Standard to play; buy Deluxe if you want the 2002 tracks and ZUN arrangements on disk.
Which version should I launch after install?
Launch New Classic. You get 12 languages, a visible hitbox, Spell Practice, and Challenge Mode. Open Classic later for the 2002 presentation, Japanese text, and 1.02h save import. Details are on New Classic vs Classic.
Is Challenge Mode the same as a 1CC?
No. Challenge Mode tracks deaths with unlimited lives. A 1CC is one limited-life credit with no continue. Use Challenge Mode to learn, then switch to a Normal credit when a pattern stops farming the death counter.
Which shot should a new player pick?
Reimu A (homing amulets / Fantasy Seal) for the first hours. Marisa A (magic missiles / Stardust Reverie) once you want faster bosses. Rankings live on the shot type ranking.
Does Easy unlock Extra Stage?
No. Easy ends at Stage 5 and Extra needs a story clear on Normal or higher without continuing. Plan a Normal 1CC after the walkthrough.
Where do I remap keys or check PC specs?
Options → Key Config, covered in controls. PC specs are on system requirements. Official stores are on links.
