Touhou Koumakyou New Classic Unlock Extra, reach Flandre

No continues, two 1UPs, Patchouli's three cards, then the basement.

Extra Stage

Extra Stage in Touhou Koumakyou New Classic is a seventh board, not a harder Stage 6. You unlock it by clearing the six-stage story on Normal or higher without using a continue. Easy cannot unlock it; Easy never reaches Remilia. The Extra credit itself has no continues. If you empty the life stock, the attempt is over. Challenge Mode still exists in New Classic as a death-count sandbox, but a Challenge run is not a 1CC and does not replace the unlock.

This page routes the stage portions and Patchouli’s midboss. Flandre’s ten cards are a separate fight; use How to Beat Flandre once you can reach her with 128 power and a spare life. Read Getting Started and the stage walkthrough first.

Unlock and what you actually start with

Clear Remilia on Normal, Hard, or Lunatic in one credit, no continue. Extra then appears on the difficulty select for that shot. Unlocking Reimu A does not gift Marisa B a free Extra. Boot Extra on New Classic first so Spell Practice and the visible hitbox are available. Classic Extra is the 2002 presentation of the same board.

You start Extra poor. Power begins at 0, bombs at the default stock, lives at the Extra opening count — not at the pile you finished Remilia with. Extra is famous for resource poverty: few bomb items, few second chances, and only two 1UPs placed in the stage portion. Score extends from the 10/20/40/60 million story table are not a plan here. Play for survival. Collect power as if every P item is a boss timer you just bought.

First half — streaming under a low ceiling

The opening waves are Extra’s personality: dense fairy streams, diagonal lanes, and aimed bursts that punish a player who stays focused the entire time. Unfocused streaming is the default. Focus only when a curtain stops being aimed and starts being a gate. New Classic’s hitbox display makes those gates honest; it does not make the streams slower.

Pick a side early and commit rather than reversing into leftover bullets. Grab the first 1UP when it appears; Extra does not pay you for skipping it. Rise to the collection line only after a wave actually cancels. Reimu A homing covers fairies that leave the column. Marisa A / Reimu B want a solved lane before you sit in it. Bomb a wave that has already closed both sides — not the first scary stream. You need bombs for Royal Flare and for Flandre.

If a particular stream reprints deaths, Spell Practice will not help; it is a stage portion. Drill it in Challenge Mode or by restarting Extra.

Patchouli midboss — Silent Selene, Royal Flare, Philosopher’s Stone

Patchouli is the Extra midboss with three named cards. Books are props. Hit Patchouli’s body. Several cards spawn books you cannot delete as a shortcut.

Moon Sign “Silent Selene.” Lasers and moon-like curtains off the books. The pattern is more static than it looks. Learn the laser timings rather than weaving at random. Stay in the larger pockets, keep her in the shot column, and do not chase a book. Bomb only if a laser gate has already closed. The card is capturable once the timing is memorized.

Sun Sign “Royal Flare.” Expanding sun bullets of a repeating type — you can pattern it. Watch the first expansion, stand in the pocket it already proved is safe, and step only as far as the next ring requires. Random strafing is a life. Bomb it on two lives; capture it if the pocket is readable, because Flandre wants those bombs more.

Fire Water Wood Metal Earth Sign “Philosopher’s Stone.” Five elements cycle while books orbit. The books are not the kill target and cannot be destroyed as a shortcut. Stay on Patchouli and micro around the orbit. Timeout is a failure mode. If the orbit has already pushed you off her, bomb, recapture the lane, and finish the stone.

New Classic Spell Practice is the homework for all three. Classic players must restart Extra to drill them. Do not take Flandre as a reward for a messy Patchouli. Reset if you spent two lives on Royal Flare; the basement will take the rest.

Second half — two lives is the real boss check

After Patchouli the stage portion resumes with more streams and a second 1UP. Same rules as the first half, with less bomb budget. Collect the 1UP. Recapture 128 power. Do not graze for score; Extra will not extend you for a pretty graze count.

Enter Flandre with 128 power, at least one bomb (two if Royal Flare was clean), and more than one life after the second 1UP. If you cannot check those boxes, the Extra is already a Patchouli story. Reset. Stage portions like Reimu A if streams are the problem, Marisa A if Patchouli timers are the problem. For Flandre herself the usual pair is Marisa A / Reimu B — high damage so RNG cards end before they get worse. That argument belongs on her page.

Use Challenge Mode to isolate first-half streams, Spell Practice for the three Patchouli cards, then limited-life Extra credits for the resource graph. When Patchouli is boring, open How to Beat Flandre and spend the rest of the week on Cranberry Trap and Q.E.D.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about New Classic, Classic, shot types, and Extra Stage.

How do I unlock Extra Stage?

Clear the six-stage story on Normal or higher without continuing. Easy cannot unlock Extra. The Extra attempt itself has no continues.

Does unlocking Extra on Reimu A unlock it for Marisa too?

No. Earn Extra per shot the usual way. A Reimu A Normal 1CC does not hand Extra to Marisa B.

What are Patchouli's Extra midboss cards?

Moon Sign Silent Selene, Sun Sign Royal Flare, and Fire Water Wood Metal Earth Sign Philosopher's Stone. Hit Patchouli, not the books. Royal Flare is patternable; Philosopher's Stone's books cannot be destroyed as a shortcut.

Why do I feel so poor on Extra?

Extra starts you at opening resources, not at your Remilia leftover pile, and it only places two 1UPs in the stage. Score extends are not a plan. Bomb Patchouli only when a card has already closed, and carry the rest to Flandre.

Should I fight Flandre if Patchouli took two lives?

Usually no. Reset the Extra. Flandre will take the remaining stock. Details for her ten cards are on How to Beat Flandre.

Can I practice Extra cards without a full Extra credit?

In New Classic, yes — Spell Practice covers the named midboss and boss cards. Stage portions still need Challenge Mode or Extra restarts. Classic has no official spell trainer.
